Is your child a picky eater?

Participants are needed for research exploring experiences of mealtimes and eating for children and young people with disabilities who are picky eaters

Many children and young people with disabilities experience restricted eating which impacts on their ability to participate in family mealtimes and celebrations. There is currently an opportunity for children and young people with disabilities who are restricted eaters to participate in research aimed at understanding how children and young people perceive and experience mealtimes and eating.

The research team are seeking participants who meet the following criteria

  • Are aged between 5 and 16 years of age
  • Have a lifelong disability
  • Eat fewer than 30 foods; or exclude whole food groups; or are unable to participate in family mealtimes.

Participants will be asked to take photos or short videos of mealtimes over a 2-week period and then participate in an interview over Zoom with Rene Fraser using the photos and videos to support the child or young person’s communication and explore their experiences of eating and mealtimes.
Children and young people will be supported to participate in interviews using a range of developmentally appropriate communication supports. The purpose of the research is to learn about children and young people’s experiences to support a holistic understanding of mealtimes and interventions that are provided to these children and young people ultimately supporting development of resources.

Autism Advisory & Support Service are not the organisers or point of contact for this research project.
If you and your child are interested in participating in this research, please contact the research team to gain more information and register your interest.
