Music Therapist
Matthew is a Registered Music Therapist with the Australian Music Therapy Association. He has worked with children and adults in community, school, and home settings for over 20 years and has a special interest in working with children and young people with autism, focussing on strengths-based approaches to intervention and the involvement of families. He has recently completed his PhD at Western Sydney University investigating the use of Figurenotes (a music notation system) by children with autism.
Matthew uses Figurenotes in his interventions to help children with autism to use music to build their capacity. Figurenotes is a concrete, matching notation system which uses colours and shapes to enable children to play what they see, making it easier than standard musical notation. Clients can develop their musical skills and learn to play an instrument. The colours and shapes of Figurenotes also allow creation of enjoyable musical games to assist engagement. Matthew is excited to have the opportunity to offer Music Therapy with Figurenotes to clients through AASS.
