Public Transport and Hidden Disabilities

Public Transport and Hidden Disabilities

The staff at Autism Advisory & support Service know all too well that when dealing with public transport, navigating the journey can be particularly challenging for individuals with hidden disabilities like autism, dementia, or anxiety, as well as those who care for them.

The Sunflower Lanyard

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is a simple tool for you to share that you have a hidden disability voluntarily. This subtle but powerful symbol serves as a signal, making it easier for people to identify and support those with hidden disabilities during their travels, especially on Sydney Trains & NSW Trainlink services whose customer service staff are trained to recognise the Sunflower and provide extra support to wearers including

  • Ensuring enough time to get on and off train services
  • Help navigating through busy train stations
  • Support during disruptions and travel changes
  • Help finding quiet spaces as needed

Sydney Trains have also developed a social story to help prepare you for your next train trip which you can download HERE
