Being a parent or carer of an autistic child or loved one can be a lot to carry. Some days feel manageable and others feel heavy. You can love your child deeply and still feel tired, worried or unsure. At Autism Advisory & Support Service, we see that every day, and that is why our Parent and Carer Support Groups exist.
These groups are a place to show up as you are. You do not need to have the right words or a plan. You do not need to explain yourself. You can listen, share, ask questions or just sit quietly with people who understand what life looks like for you. Many parents tell us it is the first time they have felt truly heard without judgement.
Our support groups are led by experienced facilitators who know the autism journey well. Conversations are guided but relaxed, allowing space for real talk about school struggles, funding stress, sleep, behaviour, sibling worries and the emotional load that can build up over time. Just as often, there is laughter, relief and that moment of realising you are not the only one feeling this way.
Parents and carers share practical ideas, gentle reassurance and small things that have helped them along the way. You might leave with a new perspective, a useful tip or simply a lighter heart than when you arrived. Sometimes, knowing you are not alone is enough for that day.
AASS also offers an Arabic Parent and Carer Support Group, creating a culturally safe space where families can connect in their first language and feel understood within their community.
Support groups run during school terms and take a break during school holidays. If you are thinking about joining, you can find the Term 1 and Term 2 dates for 2026 on our website HERE
If you have been wondering whether a support group is for you, this is your gentle nudge. You do not have to carry everything on your own. Sometimes, sitting in a room with people who get it can make all the difference.
