Watching your young adult grow into their own can be a proud and emotional journey. For many parents and carers, there comes a time when you start wondering what the next step looks like. You might be thinking about work skills, confidence, independence and how your child can build these in a space that understands them. At Autism Advisory & Support Service, our Inclusive Employment Pathways Programs were created exactly for this stage of life.
Our programs are based at Somewhere Nice, our op shop and café in Liverpool. It is a bright and friendly space where participants learn real workplace skills as part of a team that genuinely values them. Instead of sitting in a classroom all day, they take part in hands on tasks like sorting stock, greeting customers, handling simple café duties and learning the day to day flow of a workplace. Alongside this, they also learn the theory behind workplace expectations such as communication, problem solving, teamwork and understanding routine.
For many young adults with disability, the biggest shift comes from feeling included and seen. The moment a participant realises they can complete a task independently is often the moment their confidence starts to grow. Parents frequently tell us that they see changes at home too, such as stronger communication skills and more willingness to try new things.
Once a participant finishes the program, we guide them toward what comes next. Some move into mainstream workplaces, while others start in supported employment. We can stay involved by offering ongoing check ins, support for employers and help with any workplace adjustments needed. Our goal is to make sure each young adult has the best chance of success, not just at the start but over time.
Our Inclusive Employment Pathways also show local businesses the value that people with disability bring. Many employers share how much they appreciate qualities such as strong attention to detail, commitment, creative problem solving and a positive approach to teamwork. We can also provide disability awareness training for workplaces, help with onboarding and advice on wage subsidies so that businesses feel confident and supported too.
If you are a Parent or Carer looking for a safe, understanding and practical place for your young adult to build skills, Somewhere Nice is a welcoming first step. It is a place where learning feels achievable and where every participant is recognised for what they bring.
