Liverpool’s new breast screening clinic for neurodivergent women

For many women, booking a breast screen can already feel like a big step. For neurodivergent women, especially those on the autism spectrum or with sensory sensitivities, the experience can be overwhelming. Bright lights, unfamiliar sounds, time pressure and busy waiting rooms can all become barriers. That’s why the new Quiet Clinic at BreastScreen Liverpool is such a meaningful shift in care.

Located in Liverpool, NSW, this dedicated clinic has been thoughtfully designed to offer a calmer, more predictable environment. It’s not just a small adjustment. It’s a complete rethink of how breast screening can feel for women who need a little more space, time, and understanding.

The Quiet Clinic has been co-developed with autism specialists, ensuring it reflects real needs rather than assumptions. Staff are trained in autism and hidden disabilities, so patients are met with understanding from the moment they arrive. There are fewer people booked into each session, which means less noise, less waiting, and a gentler pace throughout the appointment.

Practical changes make a big difference.

Appointments are longer, giving women time to process each step without feeling rushed. Lighting is softer. Visual aids help explain what will happen. There are also calming tools available, like fidget items, and quiet spaces where patients can decompress before or after their mammogram.

Importantly, the clinic maintains the same high standard of care while making the experience more accessible. Breast screening remains one of the most effective ways to detect cancer early, particularly for women aged 50 to 74, with recommendations starting earlier for Aboriginal women.

Respect for individual needs.

This isn’t about special treatment. It’s about removing unnecessary stress so more women feel safe enough to attend. For families supporting neurodivergent loved ones, this kind of option can make all the difference between putting screening off and actually going ahead.

The Quiet Clinic sessions in Liverpool are already scheduled across several dates in 2026 (see below), offering a welcoming, sensory-friendly alternative to traditional screening settings. It’s a simple idea, done well, and one that could quietly change health outcomes for many women who have previously felt left out of the system.
