Celebrating National Families Week 2025: Lending a Hand to Thrive
From 12 to 18 May 2025, Australians across the country will come together to celebrate National Families Week, an annual event that honours the vital role families play in our society. This year’s theme, “Lending a Hand to Thrive: Supporting Each Other,” emphasises the importance of connection, care, and resilience within families.
Understanding the Importance of National Families Week
National Families Week is an initiative of Families Australia, supported by the Australian Government Department of Social Services. It coincides with the United Nations International Day of Families on 15 May, highlighting the global significance of family units.
The week serves as a reminder to appreciate the strength of family bonds, reconnect with loved ones, and engage in activities that bring us closer together. It’s an opportunity to reflect on how families support and nurture each other, contributing to the well-being of individuals and communities alike.
Strong families help children feel secure and confident. They create a foundation for healthy development, lifelong learning, and positive relationships. Adults, too, benefit from the connection and sense of belonging that families offer – whether they are made up of parents, grandparents, siblings, carers, extended relatives, or chosen family.
Participating in National Families Week
Communities, schools, organisations, and individuals are encouraged to participate in National Families Week by organising events that celebrate family connections. These can range from family picnics and storytelling sessions to workshops and community gatherings. The goal is to create inclusive spaces where all family types are recognised and celebrated.
