Starting school is a big milestone for children and families. While learning letters and numbers is important, kindergarten teachers agree that one of the most valuable skills for school readiness is self-regulation.
Self-regulation is a child’s ability to manage big feelings, emotions, and behaviours in different situations. It helps children cope with challenges, follow routines, and interact positively with others. When children can regulate their emotions, they are better prepared for the social and learning demands of school.
Start School Strong is offering a free information session for mums, dads, carers, and grandparents with children up to six years old. This session will explore why self-regulation matters and how you can support your child to develop this skill.
Presented by Kerry Lee, Transition Support and Early Intervention Teacher, the session will cover:
- What self-regulation and social-emotional development mean for young children
- How emotional intelligence supports mental health and happiness
- Practical strategies to prepare for the challenges of starting school
- A holistic view of school readiness
- Tools and tips to help your child self-regulate
