Parent Information Session: Why Self-Regulation Matters for School Readiness – with an Arabic Translator

Why Self-Regulation Matters for School Readiness

How your child can handle big feelings and emotions

Starting school is a big milestone. One of the most important skills children need before stepping into a classroom isn’t just knowing their ABCs – it’s the ability to manage their emotions.

Start School Strong invites parents, carers, and grandparents of children aged 0–6 to a free face-to-face information session on self-regulation and why it plays a critical role in school readiness.

Self-regulation is the ability to understand and manage your own behaviour and reactions to feelings and things happening around you.
This includes but is not limited to being able:

  • To regulate reactions to strong emotions like frustration, excitement, anger and embarrassment
  • To calm down after something exciting or upsetting happens
  • To focus on a task or refocus attention on a new task
  • To control your impulses

According to kindergarten teachers, children who can recognise and manage their emotions are more likely to thrive when they start school. This session, led by Kerry Lee (Transition Support of Early Intervention Teacher), will cover:

  • What self-regulation is, including social and emotional intelligence
  • Key skills for mental wellbeing and happiness from a child’s perspective
  • Practical strategies to support a smooth transition to school
  • A holistic approach to school-readiness

This is a FREE face-to-face information session at Fairfield Public School. An Arabic translator has been arranged.
