The Youth Engagement Strategy (YES) Program in Health and Community Services will be delivered in Term 2, 2026 through a partnership between TAFE NSW and South Western Sydney Local Health District. The program is designed for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander high school students and provides an introduction to career pathways within the health sector.
Program Overview
The program will run over eight consecutive days, commencing Monday 15 June 2026, at TAFE NSW Macquarie Fields. Students will participate in both classroom-based and practical learning activities, with a focus on building knowledge of the health and community services industries.
The YES Program forms part of TAFE NSW’s broader Youth Engagement Strategy and offers short, structured learning experiences that introduce students to vocational education and training. The program aims to give participants a clearer understanding of different career options and support informed decisions about future study or employment.
Learning Areas and Experiences
Across the eight days, participants will engage in a range of learning areas, including nursing and acute care, allied health, dental health, and non-clinical career pathways within the health system. The program also explores future pathways, helping students understand training and employment options beyond school.
Students will also hear directly from Aboriginal Health staff working within the local health district, providing real-life examples of career journeys and roles within the health sector.
Eligibility Criteria
Eligibility requirements apply. Students must be at least 15 years old at the time of the program, currently enrolled in Year 10, and must not have previously participated in a YES Program. Participants are also expected to demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively and follow instructions.
School Nominations
Schools are responsible for submitting an expression of interest on behalf of students and confirming that all essential eligibility criteria are met.
The program is targeted towards students who may benefit from additional engagement with education or who may be at risk of disengaging from school. Consideration may be given to factors such as attendance patterns, learning history, and readiness to transition into further education or employment.
Attendance and Transport
Students are required to attend all sessions to successfully complete the program. Transport to and from the TAFE campus is not provided, and families will need to make their own arrangements.
